…somewhere in the middle…

“Somewhere between the hot and the cold
Somewhere between the new and the old
Somewhere between who I am and who I used to be
Somewhere in the middle, You’ll find me

Somewhere between the wrong and the right
Somewhere between the darkness and the light
Somewhere between who I was and who You’re making me
Somewhere in the middle, You’ll find me

Just how close can I get, Lord, to my surrender without losing all control

Fearless warriors in a picket fence, reckless abandon wrapped in common sense
Deep water faith in the shallow end and we are caught in the middle
With eyes wide open to the differences, the God we want and the God who is
But will we trade our dreams for His or are we caught in the middle
Are we caught in the middle

Somewhere between my heart and my hands
Somewhere between my faith and my plans
Somewhere between the safety of the boat and the crashing waves

Somewhere between a whisper and a roar
Somewhere between the altar and the door
Somewhere between contented peace and always wanting more
Somewhere in the middle You’ll find me

Just how close can I get, Lord, to my surrender without losing all control

Fearless warriors in a picket fence, reckless abandon wrapped in common sense
Deep water faith in the shallow end and we are caught in the middle
With eyes wide open to the differences, the God we want and the God who is
But will we trade our dreams for His or are we caught in the middle

Fearless warriors in a picket fence, reckless abandon wrapped in common sense
Deep water faith in the shallow end and we are caught in the middle
With eyes wide open to the differences, the God we want and the God who is
But will we trade our dreams for His or are we caught in the middle

Lord, I feel You in this place and I know You’re by my side
Loving me even on these nights when I’m caught in the middle,
caught in the middle.”

What phenomenal lyrics. Casting Crowns puts it absolutely perfectly. In so many ways we are caught in the middle. I realize through these lyrics how comfortable the middle can be. We haven’t yet given up all control, or the illusion of it, but we still have some things in our own hands. We want to believe we are all for God, all for his purpose, and sold out for his Kingdom. But this song reminds me that so often times I am caught in the middle. He touches on so many of life’s aspects and what we face as Christians. Will we be sold out? Is is possible to be fully sold out for the Lord? We are sinful and always will be.

I love it near the end when he says that God is by our sides even when we are caught in the middle, loving us all the more. I don’t even know what all of this means, but I do know that this song pushes me to really think about the way I live my life. It causes me to want to be better, more authentic, more loving, and more giving- living less for myself and more for others, less on the fence and more towards grasping God’s love for everyone.

This song ultimately reminds me that this journey with God will never be over. He will never be done transforming us into more Godly people, as long as we let him. He will never leave us even in our deepest place of sin. He continually pursues us, wanting us to become the ultimate best we can be. He is constantly pouring out his love on us, wanting us to unconditionally give that love out in return. This song also reminds me that the middle of everything can be really dangerous and I don’t want to be lukewarm. But it really gets me thinking about my willingness to be fully sold out. And I pray for that desire to grow more and more each day.
